By the age of 11, Rahul had only made it as far as 2nd grade, and was not able to study regularly because his family could not afford the unofficial school fees. Rahul was forced by family poverty to drop out, and he would roam the streets collecting tin cans to recycle for small amounts of cash.

I like the idea of fair trade. It’s about trying to work together for a better world. Imagine a world in which everyone in the queue from raw producers to retailers were all working for wages and conditions that are compatible with an adequate standard of living (whatever that is). Imagine a world in which goods were manufactured and consumed in a way that was sustainable to the environment. Starting to sound to like John Lennon song…

The same week I had been reading about John the Baptist. The comparison between Jono the Baptist and Bono the lead singer of U2 popped into my mind and wouldn’t leave me alone. Here was Bono, set apart from the core of institutional religion, in a religious sense out in the wilderness, with crowds being attracted to him. Here was Bono, just like Jono, preaching a version of, “repent, for the kingdom of God is near”. 80000 people in NZ heard the gospel message that weekend. Not from pulpits and lecterns but through rock music and the spiritual gift of a contemporary prophet.

Instead we celebrated by going to a shopping mall, eating pizza, and going roller blading. We also printed special “Justees: One Year Already” shirts for each of the boys and staff.

Justees, a portmanteau of “just” and “tees”, is providing young men with jobs printing t-shirts that display positive messages. The organization also gives its staff the flexibility to continue their schooling. Justees emphasizes the value of hard work and is committed to operating as a self-funding project; it encourages its staff to take ownership in the success or failure of the project. The shirts are sold in Cambodia and in other countries worldwide.

Apparently, on average, T-shirts are read 3000 times during their lifetime making them a powerful means of communicating and a great chance to get your justice message out to a worldwide audience.

Walking around markets frequented by tourists is defintely one of those times. Shiny trinkets, pewter ornaments, brass Buddhas, wooden elephants, bamboo pipes are repeated stall after stall and city after city.
Silk scarves, bags, DVDs and T-shirts are everywhere and, ironically, every T-shirt stall sells shirts that say, SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT.
But obviously no, they are not so different!

The two buses parked a couple of blocks away as the roads get a little narrow in the immediate vicinity so the 50 Aussie teenagers, walked the rest of the way, giving them a great chance to see the community as well as a great opportunity to know what it is like to be watched! Dave did a great job of entertaining them all, presenting the story of Justees and selling 24 t-shirts although he did comment that it was very hot!
